Enter to Win
Pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students are invited to compete in a naming and art illustration contest for the new Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to win prizes. The winning entries will be converted to an adhesive decal and affixed to the #CrenshawTBM.
What is a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)?
A TBM is like a giant drill. The TBM will slowly drill through the earth, digging the tunnels needed for the trains to travel underground. The tunnels will connect three stations from Expo/Crenshaw to Leimert Park.
Why do we name the TBM?
Traditionally, a TBM cannot start work until it is given a name. The TBM is generally named after a woman as a sign of good luck for the project ahead. History shows that workers looked to Saint Barbara for protection; she is the patron saint for military engineers, miners and others who work underground.
Students from pre-k through 5th grade are invited to submit art illustrations depicting their ideal community with the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project as a central theme. The artwork submitted can be a painting, a drawing, a printed photo of a 3-D sculpture or diorama, or a collage.
Students from 6th through 12th grade are invited to submit a 2-minute (or less) video or 200 words or less essay about the recommended name for the TBM. The submission should include a description about the significance of the name chosen and how it relates to the community, transportation, history or engineering. Have fun and be creative, clever and witty! Names can be real or fictional. All entries must be a female name or character.
Submit your entry by 5pm September 1, 2015.
