Just Another Day In SouthLA
Long-time Watts resident John Jones III has been hearing about people riding bicycles around the neighborhood at night, and he seems pretty excited about it. The subject of a recent interview in Bicycling magazine, Jones started a bicycling club called the East Side Riders with his father in 2007, with the aim of serving the community and improving bike safety in the area. Since then, he’s organized group rides and community events, in addition to serving as a field deputy for City Councilmember Joe Buscaino. Jones says he’s starting to see some of that work pay off as Watts residents become more confident riding through the area.
Part of that process is educating community members about bike safety. “Our Bicycle Education and Safety Training class teaches people how to ride with traffic,” Jones says. “We strive to give everyone a helmet and lights when they take the class. After I get paid I’ll take what little I have left over and buy bikes and helmets and give them away.”
