Eat, Shop, Play Crenshaw!

EatPlayCrenshaw

Eat, Shop, Play Crenshaw is (awesome) campaign to help/keep the local businesses of the Crenshaw District while the Crenshaw Line construction moves along. Speareheaded by Metro after hearing many of the community leaders plight that the construction of the Crenshaw Line would detour traffic significantly, and eventually killing the last prominent black business district on the West Coast.  The Eat, Shop Play campaign’s Metro website offers exclusive deals and information about participating local Crenshaw businesses.

Metro and our community leaders are asking that we of the community pledge to support local Crenshaw businesses during and after the construction of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project, by doing so one will assist in sustaining the economic growth of the community.

VICTORIA’S SECRET COMING TO BALDWIN HILLS CRENSHAW
The brand’s first South LA chain to open Fall 2014

LOS ANGELES (May 6, 2014) – Following the recent major renovation of Baldwin Hills Crenshaw, another prominent brand will be added to the mall’s expanding lineup of top retailers and restaurants. Victoria’s Secret, the nation’s leading lingerie brand, will be opening their first store in South Los Angeles this fall.

The 8,509-square-foot store will be located on the ground floor of Baldwin Hills Crenshaw (BHC), directly across from the main entrance. It will feature the brand’s newest store format, offering a full range of its signature lingerie loungewear and beauty products. The store will feature a combined Victoria’s Secret and PINK retail concept.

Victoria’s Secret will join a growing list of women’s apparel and beauty retailers at BHC, which currently includes Macy’s, Forever 21, Claire’s and Lane Bryant. The shopping center is planning a celebration for the grand opening of the store this fall, complete with giveaways.

“Our team is thrilled to have one of the world’s most recognizable fashion brands open a brand new storefront here at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw,” said Ken Lombard, Vice Chairman – Investments & Partner at Capri Capital Partners, the owner of the shopping mall. “We are proud to partner with top caliber tenants like Victoria’s Secret, which I am certain will be a popular addition to our growing roster of retailers.”

After undergoing a $40 million top-to-bottom renovation—the largest mall construction project in Los Angeles in 2011— BHC has reemerged as the one of the most popular malls in the city’s urban core. The upgrade included the addition of state-of-the-art movie theaters, over 100 specialty stores, several restaurants headed by some of the city’s leading chefs, a dining court with a seating area for children, a new outdoor promenade and updated signage and facilities throughout the property.

“We constantly strive to improve the shopping experience at Baldwin Hills Crenshaw by responding to feedback and working to bring in new retailers that our customers and the community want to see here at the mall,” said Sharron King, BHC General Manager. “We are confident that the addition of Victoria’s Secret will be very well received and that we’ll see long lines of customers in the new store come opening day this fall.”

Crenshaw Greenscape Plans

CB Green SpaceThe Crenshaw Boulevard Streetscape Plan, designed to go hand in hand with the construction of the Crenshaw-to-LAX rail line, lays out an ambitious vision that will transform the look and feel of this historic street from concrete-heavy and car-centric, to “green” and pedestrian friendly.

The plan, which was funded by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority but created by the Los Angeles Department of City Planning calls for renovations and street beautifications that will stretch for 8.5 miles– from I-10 Freeway to 79th Street – with the aim of supporting vibrant neighborhoods around transit stations, where people can live, work and shop, all within a safe and pleasant walk to transit stations.

Although residents and commuters will experience some inconveniences during the construction of the rail line, set to begin this year, there are efforts underway to heed community concerns, including the creation of a small business mitigation plan to help businesses affected by the construction.

·        This represents a loss of more than 30% of the trees on Crenshaw Blvd between Exposition and 67th for the next 5 years

·        The Space Shuttle agreement replaced every tree removed with 4 new 36 inch box trees

·        MTA is only offering 2 trees 24 inch box trees for every tree lost

Joint Task Force:

The Joint Empowerment Congress West Area and Park Mesa Heights Neighborhood Council Task Forces was formed to address the removal of trees to accommodate the transport of the space shuttle endeavor by the California Science Center in 2012.  The task force was successful in entering into an agreement with the California Science Center for the planting of 4 trees for every tree removed along with 1,000 linear feet of sidewalk repair among many other community benefits. The taskforce has been meeting with MTA and the City of Los Angeles in an effort to reach an agreement on possible mitigations.  No agreement has been reached at this time.
