Check out Wine Down Wednesday, Windsor Hills own night of fun, comedy, and wine.  The show was moved from the Hollywood area to Windsor Hills because of a desire to bring local “go to” premier  entertainment spot to our area without all of the hassle that comes with going to Hollywood.

This week’s show is hosted by Kalea McNeill and features London Brown (Fat Reggie in HBO’s Ballers), Tacarra Williams (Kevin Hart’s Next Level), and more! We create a vibe, complimentary wine is provided (early arrival suggested). Personal Chef, “Color Me Creole” will be preparing her famous Cinnamon Fried Chicken with Red Beans & Rice. Vegan options available as well. Music will be provided by DJ Young Free of the Dru League.

Wine Down Wednesday is located at Cultural Interiors, a boutique in the Slauson Overhill area where you can find gifts, artifacts, and art from ancient African, Indian, and Asian cultures.  Feel free to explore while you enjoy the show!

Round Up: Hills Park Heights 2014 Spring Garden Tour

IMG_0086

I would like to applaud the maginifecent floral design and retirate how awe struck I was while attending  the Windsor Hills, View Park, Ladera Heights 2014 Spring Garden Tour.  The eclectic landscape design  of the gardens was amazing.  The beauty of these gardens was very relaxing and tranquil.  The Vendor Fair, which takes places Monteith Park in View Park, was in full swing by the time I arrived and it was jam packed with extremely creative and talented people right here from our own communities.  I met several very creative vendors, Mira, Loni, Cynthia, and Rhoda.  Mira was in the middle of creating something awesome. Mira says she been painting all her life and says she “derives her inspiration on creating positive images of women.”  Loni, whos been painting for 15 years has a more abstract style.  He’s been known as Black Picasso.  Loni recreates forms and shapes and dubs his style a classy culture.  Cynthia, another vendor, who works with gourds, yea gourds, isn’t that awesome.  Cynthia who was inspired by her mother, uses every bit of the gourds.  She makes purse, bowls, magnets, vases, leather cuffs, and more.  Rhoda, who has a high love for gardening and succulents created and sold vertical gardens.  Rhoda also is the Founder of “The Factory, Inspirational Yard Art & Garden Artistry by Rhoda.”  I also had the privelage of meeting the the Ladera Heights Girls Scout Troop who educated me on earthquakes and how to prepare for them.  The Ladera Heights Girl Scouts are working toward the hightest badge ther is for Juniors, the bronze badge so Good Luck Girls!!! Check out the pictures I was able to snap of yet again another awesome Garden Tour, see you guys again in 2016!  For any information on the vendors or the Garden Tour email Team@inspiredgardenartistry.com.

Know Your History: Park, Heights, Hills

Ladera Heights, Baldwin Hills, View Park, and Windsor Hills make up the largest, wealthiest, predominately African American community in the country.  For those not familiar with the area, imagine one big hill, on the west side of the hill there is Ladera Heights, on the north, Baldwin Hills, to the east, View Park, and to the south, Windsor Hills.  Until racial restrictive covenants were lifted in 1948, African Americans were unable to purchase homes in these areas, similar to Jews not being able to purchase west of Labrea (which gave to the formation of Hancock Park, The Jewish Beverly Hills) and not until  the 1980s did Park, Heights, Hills fully become the mecca for middle,  upper-middle, and upper class African Americans after black entertainers and athletes began moving to the area.  Ladera Heights is often the priciest of the four areas since it offers gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean.  Ladera is portioned into three sections, known as “Upper Ladera,” “Lower Ladera” and “Old Ladera”. Upper Ladera includes all houses north of Slauson in between La Cienega Blvd and Shenandoah Ave, while Lower Ladera (the larger of the two) consists of all houses south of Slauson in between Wooster and La Cienega. Old Ladera is the small area just east of La Cienega and south of Slauson.
