Check out Wine Down Wednesday, Windsor Hills own night of fun, comedy, and wine.  The show was moved from the Hollywood area to Windsor Hills because of a desire to bring local “go to” premier  entertainment spot to our area without all of the hassle that comes with going to Hollywood.

This week’s show is hosted by Kalea McNeill and features London Brown (Fat Reggie in HBO’s Ballers), Tacarra Williams (Kevin Hart’s Next Level), and more! We create a vibe, complimentary wine is provided (early arrival suggested). Personal Chef, “Color Me Creole” will be preparing her famous Cinnamon Fried Chicken with Red Beans & Rice. Vegan options available as well. Music will be provided by DJ Young Free of the Dru League.

Wine Down Wednesday is located at Cultural Interiors, a boutique in the Slauson Overhill area where you can find gifts, artifacts, and art from ancient African, Indian, and Asian cultures.  Feel free to explore while you enjoy the show!

Slauson Corridor Plans Coming Into Fruition

Slauson

Last we checked in on the progress of the portion of the Slauson Corridor set to be transformed into the Towne Center to the Ladera Heights, Windsor Hills, View Park residents Supervisor Mark Ridley Thomas was trying to collect input from the community on the name of the area and it should be designed.  Well plans are in and Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas’s website had the following to say:

  • Streetscape Improvements: After additional community feedback and analysis, it was decided that the three travel lanes in each direction on Slauson Avenue will remain. This will allow meaningful improvements to be done quickly and cost-effectively, while minimizing traffic impacts. Substantial improvements, including a bicycle route, raised landscaped medians, pedestrian lighting, and improvements to the parkway including benches and landscaping, will be made in order to improve the public right-of-way and create a pedestrian-friendly environment.  Public Works has selected a consultant, KOA Corporation, to design the project and will hold a meeting in early 2014 to obtain input from the community regarding the style and types of parkway improvements.
  • Community Business Revitalization Program: More than half a million dollars have been allocated Community Business Revitalization Program for small business owners on the south side of the street to make improvements to their facades. The businesses will receive new paint, window and awning replacement, extra lighting and improved signage. While the opportunity was offered to the business owners on the north side of the street, they declined to participate. The program is entirely funded with grants, and the improvements are set to begin early next year.

New Music School In Ladera Heights

lader music acad

Founded by Dr. Tanitra Flenaugh, the Ladera Heights Music Academy opend shop on 4912 West Slauson Ave, LA 90056 last April.  Dr. Flenaugh wanted make sure the communities of Ladera Heights, Inglewood, Windsor Hills & Baldwin Hills communities had access to affordable and excellent music classes.  “Every week, the academy is adding more classes to accommodate new students,” stated by an academy spokesperson.  The academy offers piano, violin, drums, voice, and guitar classes for students ranging from three years old to senior citizens. Parents can also sign up for MusicTogether classes with their infants.  I’m so glad that individuals are taking it upon themselves to make sure the youth of today still access to music that seems to be slowly by taking out of inner city schools.

Interrogate LA’s Future Mayor For A Hour

EC1

The annual Empowerment Congress Summit this year will feature a mayoral debate jointly hosted by the Empowerment Congress and the Second Supervisorial District.  Residents are encouraged to not only attend but submit questions for candidates.  I have been to couple politcal and community open houses and I’m kind of glad questions have to be submitted in advance, because the things some people ask, you swear they just like to hear themselves on the mic. The candidates forum will take place at 9 am on January 19, 2013, at the University of Southern California’s Bovard Auditorium. All are welcome to and encouraged to attend.  Five of the best questions will be posted on Chairmen Mark Ridley-Thomas website for us to vote, (Chairmen Ridley-Thomas is really exercising our democratic right with all this voting, but I like it!)  and the top vote-getter will be provided to the moderator for possible inclusion in the mayoral debate. If you would like to attend the Summit in person, click here to register or you can stream the debate also from Chairmen Ridley-Thomas’s site. Can someone thro Ridley-Thomas a Gatorade, this man is putting in work! Keep Up The Good Work!

Open House and Public Hearing for the West Adams-Baldwin Hills-Leimert Park

It is CRITICAL that your voice is heard at the hearing!

As you may have heard, the EIR Draft Report on the West Adams-Leimert Park-Baldwin Hills Community plan, and I’m not sure if everyone is happy about what the Los Angeles Department of City Planning has come up with.  LA City Planning has been working on updated version of the community EIR for the past 5 years which will guide development and growth for decades to come. In the fall, the Draft West-Adams-Leimert Park-Baldwin Hills New Community Plan (NCP) was released and encompasses wide-ranging recommendations including issues identified by the community as priorities: healthy food access and healthy and safe places to live, work, and play.

The City of Los Angeles is quickly finalizing the plan that proposes significant changes that will determine future development and the type of available food, access to open space, and transportation. The City is holding an open house and public hearing on January 15th to get your response to the plan.

Date: Tuesday, January 15, 2013
Location: Nate Holden Performing Arts Center
(Pictured Above)
4718 West Washington Blvd
Los Angeles, CA 90016

Time: 5PM-7PM Open House

7PM-9PM Public Hearing

For this reason, we call on all South Los Angeles leaders and neighborhood groups to support a strong, enforceable, and healthy community plan.
